THE INTERNATIONAL CAMPAIGN FOR TIBET
www.savetibet.org
Since February 2009 there have been thirteen self-immolations inside Tibet.
The Tibet situation:
In 1949 the communist party took power in China and began claiming that the sovereign nation of Tibet was part of Chinese territory and that its people were crying out for "liberation" from "imperialist forces" and from the "reactionary feudal regime in Lhasa". Nothing could have been further from the truth. The Tibetan people were content and happy with their country and had very little contact with the outside world and there were no influences whatsoever from any ‘imperialist forces’ other than China itself. In 1959 China invaded Tibet with an overwhelming force and began slaughtering and imprisoning Tibetans and subjecting them to torture and political ‘re-education’. The situation compelled the spiritual and political leader of the country (Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet) to flee on foot over the Himalayas into India where he was welcomed and provided a place of refuge for his people in Dharamsala. His Holiness has continued to govern from there and he has become the most recognized spiritual teacher and advocate for nonviolence, peace and compassion for all beings in the world. He is respected by people of all faiths and travels around the globe speaking on world peace regularly. Tibetans continue to revere His Holiness as their leader and many flee Tibet to escape Communist oppression to live near His Holiness in Dharamsala.
The International Campaign for Tibet (ICT) is a non-profit organization founded in 1988 that maintains offices in Washington DC, Amsterdam, Berlion and Brussels with field offices in Dharamsala, India and Kathmandu, Nepal. The ICT works to promote human rights and democratic freedoms for the people of Tibet through the following actions.
-Monitoring and reporting on human rights, environmental and socio-economic conditions in Tibet.
-Advocating for Tibetans imprisoned for their political or religious beliefs.
-Working with governments to develop policies and programs to help Tibetans.
-Securing humanitarian and developmental assistance for Tibetans.
-Mobilizing Individuals and the international community to take action on behalf of Tibetans.
-Promoting self-determination for the Tibetan people through negotiations between the Chinese government and the Dalai Lama.

WHY TIBET MATTERS
Where are we going? Anytime human-created atrocities occur around the world, such events contribute to the definition of what it means to be human. Human beings are in the habit of thinking they are somehow different or superior spiritually or intellectually to the other creatures we share our planet with. The way we treat our fellow human beings reveals we are indeed 'different' all right, but that difference seems to stem from the degree to which we are capable of inflicting unspeakable horrors upon each other. That difference makes us unique creatures among the life forms on earth. But if savagery and a lack of empathy is what is how we express our 'superiority' then perhaps we need to rethink the situation.
Events of oppression and genocide like we see in Nazi Germany, Tibet, Burma, Darfur and other places around the globe are disasters that offer opportunities for humanity to re-define itself. If we fail to step up to the plate and work on that re-definition then we are saying we accept the current definition. Growing numbers of human beings are coming to understand how self-destructive the current definition of humanity is for our species. If we desire to continue to exist, the human race must find a way to break the cycle of self-inflicted violence and replace the old default setting with a new, more compassionate self-image. We can begin by reaching out to those who need our help.
Someone once said that, 'civilization' is an agreement society makes with itself. History shows that there are always those who fail to get that memo. Those of us who DO get the memo have an obligation to pass it on to every person they encounter. Discovering what real compassion is and extending compassion to others is clearly the best way to do that.
