Security Training Services International ( STSI) is dedicated to raising the bar on professionalism within the private security industry and enhancing American national security in the process. To accomplish this important goal we offer a variety of security training books and manuals to assist your company in meeting or exceeding company and state training requirements and goals. Those training books and manuals can be found on the SECURITY TRAINING BOOKS page.
There is a separate page labeled SELF-IMPROVEMENT BOOKS where you can find books on personal and spiritual growth and another page labeled MEMOIRS & FICTION for those interested in more casual reading. Michael also offers comments on current affairs and global security issues from time to time on the VIGILANT AMERICAN page and the STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND blog page. The BLOGGING FOR AWARENESS page is designed to round out the uniquiness of the website by presenting ideas for those who may be inclined to explore eastern philosophy for tips on how to improve awareness and stimulate personal growth. That is where I share my ponderings on Buddhist philosophy and discuss how this enigmatic perspective of nonviolence and compassion might be capable of increasing awareness for all (including those in the security profession) and playing a role in helping us cope with (and perhaps reduce) the violence and insecurity within our cultures that is the constant companion of so many.
Thank you for visiting the COUNTRY COP BOOKS/STSI web site. Please feel free to contact Michael if you have any comments or requests for support or training books on topics not listed here. STSI is capable of producing training materials on a wide variety of topics on an individual need basis.

Michael has published over fifteen books drawing upon his studies of Buddhism, his fertile imagination and his experience with international security consulting and training. He currently lives among the tall fir trees in the rain forests of the Pacific Northwest where he continues to write and ponder the meaning of life while striving to find a balance between practicing compassion for all beings and making people safe in an unsafe world.

A lifetime of observing the human condition, often at it worst, has compelled Michael to conclude that tribalism is a fundamental component of the human survival formula. Males are born hard-wired to "mark their territory" and express dominance. It is Darwin's theory of survival of the strongest and most adaptable in action and it works to produce future generations of human beings who are stronger, more capable and more dominant than previous generations. The strongest males become the leaders and quite often, they lead their tribe to expand their territory, either literally by conquests of nearby countries or intellectually, by spreading their tribe's cultural philosophies. These hard-wired attitudes predictably produce much violence, hatred and war. World peace will never arrive until we as a species come to recognize this fundamental dynamic and dedicate ourselves to changing our own paradigm by becoming a truly peace-loving species instead of a species that respects violence and accepts domination. |

During the eight years Michael spent in Africa he developed a deep affection for the people of Africa and an intense desire to alleviate their suffering. Finding ways to do that has proved very challenging though. In addition to his international security consultant and training endeavors, Michael joined forces in 2009 with filmmaker: Terry Nickelson, Susan Zelle of the US State Department and Tanya Domi, of Columbia University, to establish the international anti-genocide activist group: Our Humanity In the Balance, (OHIB). The organization has grown exponentially and OHIB's volunteers are now working to help reduce or eliminate acts of horror and genocide inflicted by brutal governments on unarmed, innocent civilians around the world.
Michael's Statement from the OHIB Website:
What does it mean to be human? Are we really only a vast collection of diverse cultures and tribes struggling for Darwinian domination in a battle for survival of the fittest? What about spirituality? What about compassion? What about loving your neighbor as your self and forgiving your enemies? Are these real concepts, or are they pointless delusions that conflict with our humanity?
We do have the power to create our own reality. Regardless of well-meaning intentions and the lip service of a minority, humanity overall has a pretty poor track record in terms of compassion and respect for human dignity. Many agree that our humanity is in the balance now, that our species may be reaching a tipping point that will compel us to evolve or vanish. From time to time great teachers have appeared to lead us toward enlightenment. Always, the message has been the same; the path to ending suffering is accomplished by extending compassion to others. When we reach out to those in need with love and compassion we open a door to our own spirituality and discover the connection we ALL have with ALL beings. Acts of genocide close that door because they represent the absolute antithesis of altruism and contain the seeds of our own destruction. Stepping forward and shouting, “enough!” is a vital first step in a journey towards re-defining our humanity. A movement such as OHIB can be an excellent vehicle for accomplishing this. I encourage all self-realized beings to join in this journey of self-discovery.
