Study Guide for the Washington State Security Guard Certified Trainer & Company Principal Examination
The Washington State Department of Licensing requires all security guard company principals and certified trainer applicants to demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in the following areas when they sit for the Unarmed Guard Certified Trainer examination and the Company Principal exam:
(1) All topics in the security guard pre-assignment training course
(2) Washington State laws & regulations regarding security guard company and security guard licensing
(3) Legal and liability issues related to the security guard industry
(4) General security management
Many Company Principal & Certified Trainer applicants fail the State Company Principal & Certified Trainer exam because they lack familiarity with the material on the examination and do not have the time or motivation to download and review all the study material recommended by the Department of Licensing. The information contained in this STSI manual is designed to assist applicants in passing these difficult examinations because the book meets or exceeds all Washington State requirements for material that must be reviewed prior to passing the Company Principal and Certified Trainer examination. The book includes information from the websites and locations recommended by the State of Washington DOL website as well as selected excerpts from THE ROLE OF THE SECURITY OFFICER (see below), which is used by many Certified Trainers around the state to comply with the initial and annual training requirements for private security guards in The State of Washington.
Every Washington State Certified Trainer and Company Principal should own a copy!
This manual is also an excellent reference book for Company Principals & Certified Trainers because it contains all the RCW laws and WAC rules and regulations that apply to the private security industry. Whether you are preparing to pass the exam or simply desire to remain in compliance with the law you need to have this book on your shelf.

CLIENT COMMENTS:
Hello Michael,
Thank you for putting this together. I was, as you say all over the web searching for study information for the Certified Trainer exam. My company contacted STSI in April, 2008, when we started doing business in WA AMC Theaters. At that time, I received excellent information from you via phone, about the WA security industry in general and acquiring our license. We are on your mailing list and I receive the “Vigilant American” newsletter, a must read for Security professionals. I’ve purchased and used your “Role of the Security Officer” training manual and pocket books. You were also kind enough to send me a firearms lease agreement for our armed agents. In short, having you for a contact has been enormously rewarding for our company, Custom Protective Service. Thank you for all you do for the security industry and your promotion of our country's safety.
Sincerely,
Aleda C. Sebenick: Custom Protective Services (aleda@customprotective.com)
Michael,
A few months back I bought the Certified Trainer Study & Reference Manual from you and I want to thank you because I passed my Certified Trainer and Company Principal test easily thanks to your valuable book.
Thank you,
Augie Lujan

MANUAL REVIEWS:
-
Michael: I just received the manual and did a very brief review. Looks great! I can see that you did a lot of preparation. Thanks for being on top of a situation that called for some quick resolution (the DOL's raised requirements, but lack of support material).
- Christine Scott cscott@safesecurity.us
I was most impressed and bought a copy of the new manual the same day at the monthly WSSC meeting.
-Jeff Kirby, Chairman & CEO, Puget Sound Security
If anyone in the world has earned the right to compose a training manual for Security Officers, it is Michael Jaquish. Mr. Jaquish has filled a void in Washington States' Security Officer training program, not only for the officers in the field but for the trainers as well. "The Role of the Security Officer" by Michael Jaquish is a comprehensive training program designed to follow the guide lines mandated by the State of Washington for Security Officer licensing qualifications. I highly recommend this training program to be used state wide because it is professionally written and simplified in its organization. Michael Jaquish is truly a Security Professional concerned about the safety of all Americans. Good job Mike.

The "Aliens" turn out to be visitors from another time and the abduction turns out to be a rescue mission. A READER'S COMMENTS:
Don't we all love a hero? This science fiction adventure maintains interest throughout a multi-faceted and unpredictable plot, where human emotion connects the dots through fantastic episodes into other dimensions. Michael Jaquish writes in a manner which immerses the reader, transferring the story into the reader's own reality. There are only a few sci-fi stories I've liked; this is definitely on the list!

TALES OF A COUNTRY COP IN AFRICA
This is a 290-page autobiographical account of the high points of the author's police career and follows his transition into the field of international diplomatic security and intelligence in West Africa. The author arrives in Monrovia, Liberia two months before a Libyan trained force of rebels invade to start a war that will last decades and cost the country many thousands of lives and build a nation of child soldiers. The author remains in the country as the rebels creep closer and closer to the capital and is finally evacuated by the US Marines on August 5, 1990. Through the eyes of an American country cop, readers are exposed to a slice of vicious African tragedy nearly unparalleled in the annals of African savagery and left stunned and incredulous at man's inhumanity to man. The book has received many sensitive and excellent reviews since publication in 2001 (see sampling below) and continues to attract the attention of a wide range of readers.
Price: $19.95 order an autographed copy directly from Mike for $19.95 or order from amazon.com.
Special revised/expanded hardcover edition with author cover art available at Lulu for $29.13 at:
http://www.lulu.com/content/1142082 Following his evacuation from Monrovia, the author was reassigned to The Gambia, Sierra Leone and Morocco. This expanded version of the first edition reveals the author's involvement in two more African revolutions and covert activities that were conducted to maintain the security of American diplomats. In addition to being a good read, this book is a historical record of those events.

SAMPLE REVIEWS FROM AMAZON.COM A Hero's Journey. In Tales of a Country Cop In Africa, Michael Jaquish gives the reader an intimate experience of a "man's world", including the searing soul sacrifices of a man who holds his personal Code of Honor as his guiding principle. This book is more than a compilation of stories of a man of adventure. It is the story of a man's courage to face life's most difficult decisions on his terms. I am far from politically conservative. Neither am I a huge fan of the military, nor a fan of the use of violence as vehicle for entertainment, but Jaquish's articulation of his remarkable journey, his choices, his heartbreaks, his losses and his victories have allowed me, the reader and a woman, into the rarified world of a Hero's Code of Ethics. I feel privileged to have witnessed this Hero's Journey and I would recommend this read to anyone who wants to touch into the intimate world of the psyche of a man faced with the unimaginable: from the separation from his beloved young daughters, to the forced abandonment of his imperiled lover, to civil war carnage that he was forced to witness and helpless to prevent, the author's strength, his sacrifices, and his vulnerabilities are unforgettable. I think this book should be renamed: "Beyond Courage".

A TRULY GIFTED WRITER! "I have read three pieces by Michael Jaquish several times now, and I am reminded of the years I spent teaching the art of writing. The common denominator of all excellent writing is the author's ability to reach out, grab the reader's attention almost instantly, and hold it. Michael Jaquish obviously has that ability. I can see, hear, smell, taste and feel the sensations experienced by the narrator. I am there, crouched with him, tranfixed. If Michael were a student of mine, I would classify him as "gifted" and I use that term very infrequently. All you can do with a guy like this is to encourage him to keep writing." -John Minahan, Novelist and creative writing instructor, Coral Gables, FL, USA.

Truth, Justice and the American Way. Tales of a Country Cop in Africa is a fascinating peek inside the mind of one seeking to rescue the world from its own insanity. He is one of those inexplicable men involved in the battle for justice on the front lines. He is with all his being endeavoring to keep the world safe for ordinary lives. Anyone involved with Critical Incident Debriefing would benefit from reading first hand about the onslaught of horrific activities encountered in Jaquish's spellbinding account of his adventures. One can only think about Superman in his quest for Truth, Justice and the American Way as you become one with the life of this man. At the same time, one feels empathy for the personal loss of intimacy that his chosen profession creates along the way. As he becomes more and more desensitized to the worst in human nature, he loses his own ability to feel compatible with simple human bonding. As a therapist, I appreciate both the humanness and the hero in this story. I would recommend this book if only to read the last page which leaves you with a feeling of pride and hope in all that is defined by the hero. Michael Jaquish, in your quest for justice, in your quest for adventure, and in your quest for an end to your emptiness, you have given us your soul.

WONDERFULLY WRITTEN! "Mike does a wonderful job of conveying to the reader some of the realities that law enforcement officers and professional security personnel can experience on a daily basis. His stories actually draw you into his realm as if you were right there with him, seeing what he sees, feeling what he feels. If you have never been involved in the profession, this will give you a well-written taste of what it is like and help you experience the dramas that unfold each day, both physically and psychologically. His ability to divulge his own feelings shows that cops are in fact people too. His tales of Africa are humorous, gripping and spellbinding." -Steven Stewart, Bremerton, WA, USA, law enforcement professional.

SURVIVING THE DARKNESS
So what's a poetry book doing on a firearms training website? Aw, come on guys... even shooters can be sensitive fellers... right?
Regardless of how strong and prepared we think we are, life has a way of humbling us with unexpected challenges from time to time. How we react to those challenges eventually comes to define the kind of person we are. This little book of prose, poetry and sketches sprung from the heart of a journey that carried the author down a series of dark and dreary pathways and back into the light, providing him with an awareness that what happens to us is not nearly as important as how we react to what happens to us. The author uses poetry to show how adversity can be confronted as you decide whether to surrender or survive. He chose survival and his journey should inspire others who face similar challenges. The stories that follow the poetry serve as entertaining evidence of that survival. This book is just a good read for those who love poetry and revealing, artistic slices of life. Some of the poetry in this book has been previously published in various media journals and magazines.

A READER'S COMMENTS:
You must get a copy!
"This nothing short of fantastic collection of poetry is a subtle and probing anthology that gracefully navigates the human collective with remarkable clarity. I was unable to stop exploring the pages of these both conscious and mystic reflections and am still haunted by the memory of each stanza long after the last page was read. His compact stories, populated by smart, witty and well-versed poetry, speak grandly to the longings and insecurities in all of us and in a voice that is bracingly direct and sneakily profound. These most fantastic collected poems and prose show the true scale of Michael's achievement.
CERTAINLY a job well done!" -Natalya Duncombe- a fellow poet, August 23, 2007

PERSONAL SURVIVAL- A guide for maintaining personal safety and security in an unsafe world
Violence and danger is around us all the time. The moment we choose to acknowledge that, we are on our way to a voyage of discovery to formulate plans that will reduce the likelihood that we will become a victim of that violence. Choosing to become a survivor takes a mental leap. For some, that leap is more of an effort than it is for others, but it is possible for everyone.
Survival, first and foremost means awareness. An aware person is a person who is ready for action. It doesn't take a paranoid person to prepare for the possibility that at some point today you may be faced with a situation that may require all your resources to survive. Whether it is utilizing your peripheral vision to duck as something unexpectedly flies in your direction, or avoiding being side-swiped by another car on the freeway, taking refuge during an earthquake or tornado, or taking a wide turn around a shady-looking character as you negotiate your way up the sidewalk on your way to work. all these events will play out in your favor if you are aware and prepared to act according to a plan.
Society has evolved into a condition we call civilized. Civilization has come to mean safety and security.. an environment that nurtures and protects us, preserves individual rights and does not require constant vigilance in order to remain alive. Somehow, this misconception continues to exist amidst a steady stream of evidence to the contrary. Much of modern depression is directly related to the overwhelming series of violence fed to us by the news media every day. Stories of kidnappings, killings, horrific accidents, terrorist attacks and natural disasters numb our senses as we search for answers that will keep us from being swept into the abyss of chaos and anarchy. Most often we fool ourselves into pretending such things happen to others. never to us, and we struggle to go about our daily routines in a state of bliss or complacency... a strange kind of self-imposed condition of denial of the reality that we are in fact living in a very dangerous world. This book offers important tips on how you can take control of your personal security and survive life altering events with confidence.

A MONK WITHOUT A MONASTERY
An Examination of Self-Discovery
What is the true nature of the human condition? What is truth? Does it really all come down to suffering? Are we really powerless to alter our own destiny, let alone the destiny of the human species? For certain, suffering is a big, important part of the picture but the vast diversity and magnitude of challenges faced by humanity over history and today all point to something more than that. Many great mystics and teachers such as Siddhartha Gautama, Mahatma Gandhi, Thomas Merton, Aristotle, Saint Francis of Assisi, Paramahansa Yogananda and others have been led to follow a contemplative path that has allowed them to find peace and leave pointers for those who wish to follow in their steps. Self-awareness and the search for spiritual growth has opened the eyes of countless such searchers to an astonishingly beautiful and purposeful universe intimately connected to the very essence of our immortal spiritual being that reveals that the true purpose to life is the expansion of our awareness of our self, the universe and the connection that we share with all beings.
Is humanity on the cusp of an evolutionary leap in the spiritual consciousness? Growing numbers of human beings seem to believe that there is mounting evidence that a large segment of humanity is participating in an acceleration of awareness that may alter the way human beings view themselves and one another. This awareness is generating a renewed focus on spirituality and vast numbers of books are being written and published on the subject.
Have such evolutionary leaps occurred for human beings in the past? Perhaps, but when one examines the history of mankind one cannot help but be overwhelmed by the incredible number of destructive journeys that previous generations of human beings have embarked upon that have inflicted unspeakable horrors on society. Such self-destructive behavior continues to reveal itself even to this day and there are those who believe that these patterns could doom humanity entirely if they are not confronted and altered soon.
The author has spent a very diverse life observing the human condition and pondering life from a spiritual perspective. He has degrees in Business Administration and Law Enforcement and is the author of numerous books. Following a career as a peace officer in Washington State, he traveled to West Africa in 1989 and spent the next seven years running security operations for the US State Department, often in the midst of civil war and political unrest. He now resides in the Pacific Northwest area of the United States where he studies spiritual philosophy, writes and works as an International Security Consultant, Private Investigator, Spiritual Guide and Life Coach.
This book is an examination of humanity that pulls no punches and attempts to impress the reader with the seriousness of the situation and motivate them to become involved in the solution instead of the problem. It is intended to be used for personal development or as a textbook for instructors or counselors conducting classes on spiritual and personal growth and awareness.

FATU AND THE LIONESS- A traditional West African folk story
Yeah, I know... "What's a children's book doing on a firearms training site?" Well, even shooters have kids... right?
This is a traditional West African children's story that has up to now, been passed down through the generations by village elders to children around camp fires beneath the great African moon. Fatu is the wife of Momodou and she is without child and unhappy because her husband, a village fisherman, ignores her for his fishing duties. She seeks help from the local Marabout man (witch doctor) who lives in a great, hollow baobab tree in the jungle and is sent on a quest to obtain breast milk from a nursing lioness. Her search and what happens after contains a valuable life-lesson for young African children. This is a very special story that deserves to be shared with children everywhere.

A SKETCHY LIFE- Evidence of a lifetime of doodling
This book contains over fifty pencil and ink sketches done by Michael James Jaquish. Some were created for specific reasons (such as a line of greeting cards or to illustrate a children's book) but most were done simply to satisfy a powerful addiction to doodling. A number of them were created by candle light in the jungles of West Africa or equally exotic spots around the globe.
The point of this book is; you don't have to be a "brilliant artist" to have fun sketching! Drawing comes more naturally for some than others but no one should ever be afraid of expressing themselves with a pen or pencil when the mood strikes. Drawing is a great release for tension and stress because it allows us to express the creative side of our nature that is so often suppressed in today's society. And there is always the remote but very real possibility that just maybe, one day, if you practice enough, just maybe, you will become a wonderful artist!
